When you keep your Manitowoc ice machine in peak condition with regular maintenance, you’ll increase its longevity and reduce the frequency of unexpected breakdowns and costly services calls.

How to Clean Heavily Scaled Manitowoc Flake, Chiplet, and Nugget Ice Machines

Your Manitowoc ice machines will require cleaning maintenance when they present some or all of the following symptoms:
  • Grinding, popping or squealing noises from the evaporator
  • Grinding noise from the gearbox
  • Ice machine repeatedly trips the speed sensor

Procedure To Clean Your Manitowoc Ice Machine

Before starting, be sure to wear rubber gloves and safety goggles when handling any ice machine cleaner or sanitizer.
  1. Remove front and top covers and set toggle switch to the OFF position.
  2. Remove all ice from bin.
  3. Turn off the water supply to the ice machine.
  4. Place the ICE/OFF/CLEAN toggle switch in the CLEAN position. The dump valve will open and drain the water from the evaporator and reservoir.
  5. Wait approximately 30 seconds (or until the evaporator is drained) and place the toggle switch in the OFF position.
  6. **IMPORTANT! Use only Manitowoc Ice Machine Cleaner P/N 000000084 Premix cleaner with lukewarm water in a non-metallic container. Refer to the chart in your owners manual for model number, and cleaner to water ratio.
  7. Start an ice-making cycle by moving the toggle switch to the ICE position. Water will flow through the dump valve and down the drain for 45 seconds. After 45 seconds move the toggle switch to the OFF position. This procedure removes all water from the evaporator and water reservoir.
  8. Remove the plug/cover from the top of the water reservoir. Add the entire cleaner/water solution and reinstall the plug/cover. Leave the cleaner/water solution in the evaporator for a minimum of 4 hours.
  9. Move the toggle switch from OFF to ICE. The cleaner/water solution will flow through the water dump valve and down the drain for 45 seconds.
  10. Move the toggle switch to the OFF position, then follow the standard cleaning and sanitizing procedures for the model ice machine you are cleaning.
  11. Use any remaining cleaning mixture for removal of parts for cleaning.
NOTE: The procedures are detailed in the Installation, Use and Care Manual and the ice machine label on the front panel of your Manitowoc ice machine.
